At Loop, we believe that motivation is something not many individuals understand. It’s commonly mistaken for materialistic things. For example, if you want your child to do well in school you offer them money, video games, or some incentive to make sure they do it properly. However, while incentives are great there is something far more valuable beyond that mentality towards motivation. After watching this Ted Talks speech by Dan Pink, we realized just how important a properly mentality towards motivation is crucial for progress and success. Dan Pink says that social scientists conducted various studies in different areas with students and individuals.

 

Pink states, “Dan Ariely, one of the greatest economist of our time, he and three colleagues did a study of some MIT students. They gave these MIT students a bunch of games. Games that involved creativity and motor skills, and concentration. And they offered them for performance three levels of rewards. High reward for doing well and so on. So what happened? ‘As long as the task involved only mechanical skill, bonuses worked as they would be expected: the higher the pay, the better the performance. But once the task called for rudimentary cognitive skill, a larger reward led to poorer performance.” Then they wanted to see if the results would vary in a low-income area such as Madurai, India. A reward based on North American standards would be more meaningful there. So what happened? “People that were offered the highest rewards did worst of them all. Higher incentives lead to worst performance!”

Studies and research indicate that when you want high performance, the solution is simple: to motivate individuals — make sure you like it and have the desire to do something that’s when you perform the best,” says Loop. Pink says that there should be a yearning to get better and better every year when you do something you like! This is how you constantly motivate yourself and understand that motivation is much more than tons of money or incentives.
